LMS Rebuilt 'Scot' 4-6-0 brings Atlantic Coast Express into Waterloo

On a run up from Exeter during the 1948 Locomotive Exchanges, no. 46154 'The Hussar' (built July 1930, rebuilt March 1948, withdrawn December 1962) passes Waterloo Power Box (Friday, 18th June 1948). This was one of the engines that excelled themselves on the Trials.

The caption said the loco had been to Brighton Works ‘for inspection’, but did not state why an LMR 9F (based Wellingborough, Northants) went to Brighton.

However, it is more likely that the locomotive was simply turned on the Cliftonville Spur /Hove /Brighton triangle.

WD Austerity on a freight at London Bridge

Down freight on No. 2 Up Eastern line at London Bridge hauled by ex-WD2-8-0 'Austerity' no.78597. Built in late 1944 and stored briefly at Longmoor before s hipping over the Channel in December 1944, no.78597 was returned to England in April 1946. After overhaul at Ashford, this locomotive was loaned to the SR (at Hither Green) in May 1947 eventually becoming no. 90390 under British Railways. It was transferred to the LMR in September 1951 and withdrawn in September 1965.

Still equipped with the Westinghouse pump fitted for working trains on the Continent, the train comprises Continental fruit wagons, the front one being Italian (FS), presumably returning to Dover for the train-ferry to Dunkerque from Ewer Street (Southwark) Depot.
